Privacy Awareness on the Increase Worldwide

Investigators, Doctors, Insurance Agencies -whatever line of business you are in these days it is becomming more likely that your profession will have to adhere to increased regulations where privacy is concerned.
I have been attending the 55th annual conference of the Council of International Investigators in Queensland, Australia and the theme to this year’s conference was “Privacy Issues”.

There was an impressive array of speakers to asist the disemenation of information and updates from around the world. Professor Paul Wilson, Chair of Criminology and Forensic Psychology at Bond University gave the security profession something to ponder when he discussed the pro and cons..but mainly the cons of the proliferation of CCTV cameras in today’s society.

One thought-provoking statistic which surfaced from his lecture was that in general, those who monitor CCTV cameras are likely to spend over 83% of their working period devoted to duties other than monitoring the cameras. The United Kingdom is said to have more than 4 million cameras installed in public places.

On average, a person going about their business in London is likely to be captured three hundred times each day on the city’s camera system. While these cameras are sure to be a great tool to identify criminal activity, it is little wonder so many groups are starting to make themselves heard regarding the electronic intrusion in peoples’ daily lives.
